LA Multifariam, multisque modis olim Deus loquens patribus in prophetis:
EN God, who, at sundry times and in divers manners, spoke in times past to the fathers by the prophets, last of all,
^1
2
EN in these days, has spoken to us by his Son, whom he has appointed heir of all things, by whom also he made the world.
^2
3
EN Who being the brightness of his glory and the figure of his substance and upholding all things by the word of his power, making purgation of sins, sits on the right hand of the majesty on high:
^3
[!note]- The figure…
that is, the express image, and most perfect resemblance.
[!note]- Making purgation…
That is, having purged away our sins by his passion.
4
LA tanto melior angelis effectus, quanto differentius præ illis nomen hæreditavit.
EN Being made so much better than the angels as he has inherited a more excellent name than they.
^4
5
GR τίνι γὰρ εἶπέν ποτε τῶν ἀγγέλων, υἱός μου εἶ σύ, ἐγὼ σήμερον γεγέννηκά σε; καὶ πάλιν, ἐγὼ ἔσομαι αὐτῷ εἰς πατέρα, καὶ αὐτὸς ἔσται μοι εἰς υἱόν;
LA Cui enim dixit aliquando angelorum: Filius meus es tu, ego hodie genui te? Et rursum: Ego ero illi in patrem, et ipse erit mihi in filium?
EN For to which of the angels has he said at any time: You are my Son, today have I begotten you? And again: I will be to him a Father, and he shall be to me a Son?
^5
6
LA Et cum iterum introducit primogenitum in orbem terræ, dicit: Et adorent eum omnes angeli Dei.
EN And again, when he brings in the first begotten into the world, he says: And let all the angels of God adore him.
^6
7
LA Et ad angelos quidem dicit: Qui facit angelos suos spiritus, et ministros suos flammam ignis.
EN And to the angels indeed he says: He that makes his angels spirits and his ministers a flame of fire.
^7
8
LA Ad Filium autem: Thronus tuus Deus in sæculum sæculi: virga æquitatis, virga regni tui.
EN But to the Son: Your throne, O God, is for ever and ever: a sceptre of justice is the sceptre of your kingdom.
^8
9
LA Dilexisti justitiam, et odisti iniquitatem: propterea unxit te Deus, Deus tuus, oleo exultationis præ participibus tuis.
EN You have loved justice and hated iniquity: therefore God, your God, has anointed you with the oil of gladness above your fellows.
^9
10
LA Et: Tu in principio, Domine, terram fundasti: et opera manuum tuarum sunt cæli.
EN And: You in the beginning, O Lord, founded the earth: and the works of your hands are the heavens.
^10
11
EN They shall perish: but you shall continue: and they shall all grow old as a garment.
^11
12
EN And as a vesture shall you change them, and they shall be changed. But you are the selfsame: and your years shall not fail.
^12
13
GR πρὸς τίνα δὲ τῶν ἀγγέλων εἴρηκέν ποτε, κάθου ἐκ δεξιῶν μου ἕως ἂν θῶ τοὺς ἐχθρούς σου ὑποπόδιον τῶν ποδῶν σου;
LA Ad quem autem angelorum dixit aliquando: Sede a dextris meis, quoadusque ponam inimicos tuos scabellum pedum tuorum?
EN But to which of the angels said he at any time: Sit on my right hand, until I make your enemies your footstool?
^13
14
GR οὐχὶ πάντες εἰσὶν λειτουργικὰ πνεύματα εἰς διακονίαν ἀποστελλόμενα διὰ τοὺς μέλλοντας κληρονομεῖν σωτηρίαν;
LA Nonne omnes sunt administratorii spiritus, in ministerium missi propter eos, qui hæreditatem capient salutis?
EN Are they not all ministering spirits, sent to minister for them who shall receive the inheritance of salvation?
